Letter of Introduction by Prof. Robert Picht
Ludwigsburg, 26.05.1994
Dear Colleagues,
Looking forward to our meeting in Athens, I am sending you some documents concerning the state of the art and the possible aims of our working group "Education for Cultural Diversity". In order to reach practical results we should concentrate on some fundamental questions:
- what is the significance of the new emphasis on "diversity" after Maastricht?
- how to qualify for European multiculturalism and the challenges of competition in the Common Market?
- how to promote an acceptable European identity: common heritage, interdependencies and conflicts, communication between democratic societies, towards a European civil society, common / divergent visions and projects for the future?
In our proposals we should find out the appropriate equilibrium between utopian necessities, a realistic approach to the existing institutional, budgetary and political constraints and to human nature reluctant to excessive pedagogical treatment and always ready to forget (factor not very popular in the pedagogical debate).
We could try to develop recommendations for future action concerning European programmes like Socrates or the national educational systems. The working time being limited please prepare already a short version (1 page) of your principal recommendations.
Yours sincerely,
(Prof. Dr. Robert Picht)
