A Constructive Dialogue between Cultures -China and Greece 7 - 8 August 2013

Note: this intended conference was cancelled due to visa problems and only a small delegation came to Athens for consultation about prospects of a conference in Beijing.

Actions & Aims of the Forum

 

In September of 2011, NGO “Horizons-Actions” participated in a great forum in Beijing about the friendship between peoples.

Friendship is a valuable asset that shapes the relationships of our lifetime. Without friendship and respect about each other’s identity and views it is very hard to have good faith. Without good faith there can be no understanding. Without understanding there can be no communication and no agreement. Without agreement there can be no harmony and no effect.

During that forum in Beijing the Greek delegation made the proposal that great China with its enormous civilization along with small Greece with is colossal civilization should organize a joint forum about the “constructive dialogue between cultures”.

Our proposal was accepted by the Chinese and they expressed their desire to have a longstanding cooperation on several fields, given that they work together with sixty one organizations-members which operate in many cultural areas.

The forum was decided to be a uniform one but it would be held in two countries. We will begin in Greece in August of 2013 during the Word Congress of Philosophy, where specific issues and projects will be set and then we will continue in November of 2013 in Beijing.

The launch will take place on August 8, 2013 at the World Congress of Philosophy and will continue in three more places at the Foundation of the Hellenic World, the Benaki Museum and the International Olympic Academy in Olympia. We will discuss and address specific topics and create long-term programs, the continuity of which will be finalized and arranged in Beijing, on November 2013.

In China on 14^th of November 2013 the discussion on “Constructive Dialogue between Cultures” will be broadened, based on the issues set in Athens. In this forum international celebrities from all over the world will participate too.

The Chinese institutions organizing the forum are: “Beijing NGO Association for International Exchanges” and the “Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries”.

From the Greek side the institutions participating are: the N.G.O. “Horizons-Actions” (acting as the coordinator) as well as the “Greece-China Association”, the Benaki Museum, the International Olympic Academy, the Hellenic World Foundation, the Department of Ancient Greek Philosophy of the University of Edinburgh, “Demokritos – National Center for Scientific Research”, the “Greek-Chinese Academy for Education”. In collaboration with the tourism organization “Argo Travel”, Nana Kazis and the Archeologist, Honorary Director of the Greek Ministry of Culture, Elizabeth Spathari.

In Athens and Beijing, along with the main theme “Constructive Dialogue between Cultures” five big programs that will take place by institutions of Greece and China are:

 

1. Digital Library of Philosophy - A Dialogue between Confucius and Socrates

2. Mathematical Thought - From ancient times until today

3. Art and Museums

 

• Art for life and social growth

• Museums for Education and Cultural Heritage

 

4. The Olympic Idea

 

• The acknowledgement of Man

• The cultivation of the mind and body

• The Olympic Games of Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, and probably those of London 2008, will propose to Rio de Janeiro 2016, to redefine and grow the concept of the Olympic Spirit and Olympic Truce for the next Olympic Games.

 

5. Culture – Tourism

• The visitor and the tourist have to be able to perceive the importance, the history and the concept of the places they visit as well as the effects they had on modern life. In many cases the signaling of historical cities will have to be designed so that people visiting them can be made aware of the historical and cultural places they are.
