Workshop 6: Roots of Western and European Civilisation: Greek and European Studies and Impact upon European Cultures: Film, Theatre, Arts and the Media

Crucial for preparing this workshop was the need to distinguish culture from civilisation. The latter passes on values through institutions like theatres, museums, film and takes a long term perspective as to what culture of the present deals with. There can be embedded different cultures within one and the same Western Civilization while the British Museum speaks of exhibiting items of its various collections at the cross-road of different civilizations. That relates to the first workshop of this Fifth Seminar but aims now to deal with it by attempting to see how through the emerging European Union the relationship between European cultures and Western Civilization is subject to change.
