Beyond Mere Employment Schemes - Interregional Activities to safeguard Employment - what Migrant workers in Europe are asking for

Integration into the labour force of the host country - acculturation.

An end to being seen as "black labour".

The right to form or join a union, i.e. the right to self-organization.

National legislation to be sensitive to the situation of migrants as, for example, in Greece Law 1975 places migrant issues under the power of the Ministry of Public Order and ignores the social-human dimension - this creates a constant threat to the Third World nationals in Greece.

Recognition of the link between legislation and employment and the country's attitude and treatment of migrants (the linking of residence with work permits).

Re-examination of the work permit issue: it is still a problem for EU nationals moving to other countries within Europe, the problem of migrants moving about in Europe is even more acute, it is even impossible to transfer to other jobs in the same country.

To improve the bureaucratic process in each country, so that there is a clear and standard policy rather than people being subjected to the whims and fancies of civil servants.

All services to receive training in professionalism (the police, immigrant officials, hospital personnel including doctors, taxation officials, even taxi drivers) so they:
offer their services respectfully,
communicate thoughtfully, clearly and rationally, and,
are aware of their own tendency to stereotype others,
and of the violence underlying behaviour towards
minority groups and women, children and others.
