Culture and Technology

“The future of European cities: culture and technology - Myth of the City 1995” - the importance of this theme can be linked to the development of the Internet and in the fields of culture and education of such concepts as 'life long learning'. Thanos Contargyris developed some ideas on how to face the impact of the new communication technologies.

As the discussion at FORTH it was interesting to hear the viewpoints of Katerina Papadaki and Dimitris Pattakos

The chair person Dr. Dimitri Stathakos, Research Director, Institute of Biology at “Demokritos”(National Centre for Scientific Research) gave a special speech (a version only in Greek is available).

Records still have to be found as to the pening remarks by Prof. Papadaki, FORTH representative about: Technological parks and the specific situation in Heraklion

Further viewpoints were expressed by following persons:

Phil Cooke Urban and regional innovation systems: designing for the future

Sophia Yannatou The strange character of a place

Brendan Kennelly The myth of the city

Katerina Anghelaki Rooke The nature of understanding our cultural roots

Anna Arvanitaki Technological parks, innovation and viable cities

Pavlos Delladetsimas Looking beyond vested interests: what is happening to the land – urban policy, planning and rhetorics

This was followed by a general discusson during which the key term about the changing landscape of cities and rural countryside was coined by Brendan Kennelly. In observing the location of the institution where the discussion was taking place, and it meant in the middle of a farm land had sprung up something like a 'technological innovation park', that more and more the differences between urban and rural land was diminishing. Instead there has come into being something like a mixture of the two, neither rural but also not urban, hence the

'rur-urb land'

This has many consequences for how land use planning shall be shaped in the next decade and more so as urban expansion and higher mobility by car leads to the spreading out of the city.

A general paper to introduce the 'Myth of the City' conference to both the audience in Iraklion and to the participants about to travel for a week throughout Crete in order to discuss these and various other issues with a prime purpose to bring poets and planners together, was given by:

Hatto Fischer The concept of life in cities
