Workshop D: Artistic creation, disabilities and participation – social inclusion promoted by local and regional authorities, artists and civil society

This former industrial arenal was used to produce chocolates. During those times the entire work force lived in near-by premises which were built for this specific purpose. Now it is a huge cultural centre with three stages, a semi circus tent like housing, open premises for having circus wagons, a contemporary art centre and two studios, one for heavy metal.

Workshop D – Artistic creation, disabilities and participation: social inclusion promoted by local and regional authorities, artists and civil society
Jon Reid, Creative arts tutor at Sense Scotland (Glasgow) will portray the ‘Voyager Princess’ project and its creative process bringing together five countries.
Jon Reid summarizes his presentation this way:
The paper will focus on the theatrical model with deafblind people to create and perform meaningful theatre and what those who support these individuals can learn from this approach. We will explore the challenges and outcomes of this work from an individual, philosophical and societal point of view and look at the argument for a creative approach to communication, not just with people with multi-sensory impairments but also with the staff teams, families and organisations who populate their lives.
Simon Houriez, Director of the association ‘Signes de Sens’ (France) will focus on accessibility and the use of ICT for cultural mediation. He will present the example of a regional service of professional Deaf guides developed through the collaboration of civil society and local and regional authorities.
The participants will be invited to reflect about these examples and to discuss about strategies for optimising the relations between all the stakeholders involved in the promotion of social inclusion through culture in cities and regions.
This workshop was conceived from and constituted around the play Les Oiseaux d'apres Aristophane – adapted and directed by Madeleine Louarn with the “Atelier Catalyse” (a group of professional artists who are mentally challenged, one of the most fascinating troupes in France).
Madeleine Louarn will talk about the background of her work and her artistic creations. Examples of European cultural co-operation in this field will be presented as well.
