I. Kritya, the Trust

Trust Registration No. 23/2007, Trivandrum, Kerala- Kritya is a Trust established to widen the scope and reach of global literature, arts and culture. It seeks to be accessible through translation, publication, performance, interaction and exchange of literary ideas among various languages and cultures. Kritya was formally registered as a trust in January 2007.

II. Objective

* Promote the aesthetic experience through poetry and the allied art forms.

* Provide a common forum for poetry-lovers all over the world to come together, show case their talent and exchange views.

* Allow free expression through poetry and the allied arts regardless of class, creed, colour or country.

* Encourage new talent without compromising on quality.

* Create an awareness of the past masters with due tributes.

* Establish and strengthen a fraternity of peace and mutual understanding through the medium of poetry.

IV Kritya Festivals

We have celebrated six International poetry festivals and held a number of workshops till date.

Kritya 2005 - (Kerala)Kritya took her first step into the vast expanse of the world of poetry in June 2005. To mark Kritya's achievement we organized a “celebration of poetry” or poetry festival at the Museum Auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

As we know, poetry, the oldest form of literature, is always kept alive in other art forms like drama, dance, music and even painting. So we celebrated it by singing, acting, talking and painting poetry.

Kritya 2006- (Jammu & Kashmir) Kritya’sIInd poetry festival was celebrated by releasing Dogri special in Abhinava Theater (Jammu & Kashmir) in collaboration with the J&K Academy of Arts, Culture and Languages on 4th July 2006. Street play, poetry posters and musical poetry were the major attractions of the festival.

Kritya 2007- (Kerala) The third festival was held from July 21 to 23, 2007; and this time it was an International Festival of Poetry. To capture the Festival distinctively, a number of poets and cultural activists from all over the world participated. To promote the voice of poetry, we revived diverse voices in art and culture.

Around 60 poets, from India and abroad, assembled in Thiruvananthapuram to present their work. Performance poets and artists added to the Festival's cultural dimensions.

Kritya 2008 - (Chandigarh- Punjab) The fourth festival was held in Chandigarh (Punjab) in collaboration with the Punjab Arts Council and with the support of the Sahitya Akademi, CILL Mysore and other literary bodies in different countries.

During the three days of this Poetry Festival, we had readings of almost 60 prominent poets. Along with a painting exhibition of young artists and poetry film presentation were also held.

Kritya 2010 - Mysore – Karnataka The festival was organized in collaboration with the CIIL, Mysore, which is a central government body for the promotion of languages. The theme of the fifth festival was “the poetry of exile, trauma and survival”. The known poets of exile all around the world who had assembled for the festival expressed exile in different individual terms. We had 24 renowned poets from other countries and almost 20 young poets from different parts of India. An entire session was devoted to Kannada poetry.

Kritya 2011 - Nagpur - Maharashtra was focused on the manifestations and realizations of gender through poetry. Every language brings with it its own baggage of gender codes. There were 25 poets from around the world and 25 poets from Indian languages. Two full sessions were set apart for Marathi poetry. Kritya 201l organized a painting workshop for children in collaboration with Basoli group with almost 100 children. There were short fil m presentations by Sadho, (Indian poetry film NGO), Norla (Norwegian literary organization) and by Kritya. The co host of the festival was LAD College, Nagpur.

V-Kritya2012- Trivandrum, Kerala-The 7th edition of Kriya International Poetry Festival, Kritya 2012 was held at VyloppilliSamskriti Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram from January 16 - 18, 2012 and the extension of the festival was held on January 19 at Asan Smarakam, Thonnakkal and on January 20 and 21 at Sameeksha Ashram, Kalady. We had 25 international poet guests and 25 indian poets guest. This festival was dedicated to Rabindra Nath Tagore and supported by Culture department of India. On the occasion an Art Exhibition and film exhibition has been envisaged. Kritya2012 organized live painting performance by B.D.Dethan, One of the well-known artists in Kerala. and K. Jayakumar ( English ) is a Poet, Artist , lyricist and scriptwriter. The festival had given stage ot poetry films also. Photo Poetry was another attraction in Kritya festival.

Outline of Kritya 2013 Festival

Kritya 2013 will be hosted in Wardha, in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya. (September, 2013) As its nomadic nature Kritya likes to organize festival in a new place every year. Our Coming festival will take place in Wardha.

 

Theme of Kritya 2013:

'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' across many cultures

Though Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is an ancient Vedic concept of the world as one family, it continues to be interpreted through time by various individuals in different ways. Religious leaders and their followers interpreted it to impose unity based on religion and this interpretation led to wars of conquest. But the concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam as interpreted by Mahatma Gandhi, who associated it with peace and kinship, is more relevant than ever in the current conditions of disturbance and uncertainty. As we are hosting the Kritya Festival in Wardha, in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, the theme of the festival is 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam across many cultures'.

Board of Indian Advisor:

1-Prof. K Satchidanandan- is a major Indian poet and critic, writing in Malayalam, and English. Satchidanandan has established himself as an academician, editor, translator and playwright. He has to his credit 22 collections of poetry besides many selections, 16 collections of translations of poetry and 19 collections of essays on literature, language and society-three of them in English- besides four plays and three travel narratives. He has 24 collections of his poetry in translation in 16 languages including Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, English, French, German and Italian. He has introduced several poets like Garcia Lorca, Alexander Block, Voznesensky, Pablo Neruda, Cesar Vallejo, Bertolt Brecht, Paul Celan, Zbignew Herbert, Eugenio Montale, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Mahmoud Darwish and Yehuda Amichai to Malayalam readers through translations and studies besides a lot of Black, Latin American and Indian poetry. He has also travelled widely, writing and lecturing.

2-H.S. Shivaprakash - H.S. Shivaprakash (Hulkuntemath Shivamurthy Sastri ) is a leading poet and playwright writing in Kannada. He is professor at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, currently serving as the dean of the school. He has seven anthologies of poems, twelve plays, and several other books to his credit. His works have been widely translated into English, Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. His plays have been performed in Kannada, Hindi, Manipuri and Malayalam. Shivaprakash is also a well-known authority on vachana literature, Bhakti movements of India, and Sufi and other mystic traditions.

3-Abhay Kumar is an Indian author, poet, artist and diplomat. His book River Valley to Silicon Valley tries to draw the portrait of a modern young Indian His work in the field of Gov2.0 & digital diplomacy, philosophical poetry planetary scale of thinking in his art works and writings on Global democracy envision a second renaissance on the planet.

4-Dr. Jayasree Ramakrishnan Nair - Freelance editor and translator. Senior Associate Editor, Samyukta - A Journal of Women's Studies. Working as Senior Editor at Oregon Technologies, Pravachambalam, Thiruvananthapuram. She has co-ordinated a project on Women and Health, focusing on the physical and mental health of women and published the findings in 'Engendering Health - A Brief History of Women's Involvement in Health Issues' - written in collaboration with Dr. Hema R. Nair. Apart from translations, her creative pursuits include writing poetry and painting. She has translated four plays of Shakespeare into Malayalam, which were published by D.C.Books, Kottayam, 2000. The short stories she translated has appeared in Samakalika Bharathiya Cherukathakal-Malayalam translation of Contemporary Indian Short Stories Vols. 1 & 2 (New Delhi:Sahitya Akademi, 1995). She has also translated and published Walt Whitman's poems into Malayalam. Areas of interest are Translation Studies, Folklore Studies, Shakespeare Studies and Women's Studies.

5-Vikram Sampath- Writer, Artist, Musician along with technical background. Born and raised in Bangalore (Vikram's first love!), Vikram completed his schooling in Bangalore at the Sri Aurobindo Memorial School and Bishop Cotton Boys' School. He thereafter moved to the fascinating town of Pilani to obtain a Bachelors in Engineering in Electronics and a Masters in Mathematics from one of India's most reputed schools, BITS-Pilani.Vikram has been a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study (Wissenschaftskolleg) in Berlin, Germany (for 2010-11) where he studied the early gramophone recordings of Indian music. He has also established the Archive of Indian Music (AIM) as a private Trust that seeks to digitize and preserve old gramophone recordings of India.

Vikram publishes regularly in leading Indian dailies and magazines on a wide array of topics. In addition, Vikram is also a serious student of Carnatic Classical vocal music and has been training under various eminent practitioners of the art form. Subjects related to history, music, art and culture are close to his heart.

6- Sudeep Sen- [www.sudeepsen.net] is widely recognised as a major new generation voice in world literature and ‘one of the finest younger English-language poets in the international literary scene’ (BBC Radio). Sen’s prize-winning books include: Postmarked India: New & Selected Poems (HarperCollins), Distracted Geographies, Prayer Flag, Rain, Aria (A K Ramanujan Translation Award), Ladakh, Letters of Glass, and The HarperCollins Book of English Poetry (editor). Blue Nude: New & Selected Poems | Translations 1979-2014 (Jorge Zalamea International Poetry Prize) is forthcoming. His poems, translated into twenty-five languages, have featured in major international anthologies. His words have appeared in the TLS, Newsweek, Guardian, Observer, Independent, Telegraph, Herald, Harvard Review, Hindu, Hindustan Times, Times of India, Outlook, India Today, and broadcast on BBC, PBS, CNN IBN, NDTV, AIR & Doordarshan. Sen’s newer work appears in New Writing 15 (Granta), Language for a New Century (Norton), Leela (Collins), Indian Love Poems (Knopf/Random House/Everyman), Out of Bounds (Bloodaxe), and Initiate: Oxford New Writing (Blackwell). He is the editorial director of AARK ARTS and the editor of Atlas.

 

Board of International Advisors

1--Ataol Behramoglu- (Turkey) graduated from the University of Ankara, Department of Russian Language and Literature in 1966. In 1970 he published his second book of verse One Day Definitely. Reprinted many times until today, this collection of poems was well received as a synthesis of the poetic tradition of Nazim Hikmet (1902-1963) with elements of symbolism and surrealism. Between November 1972 and June 1974 he worked as a research assistant at Moscow State University Faculty of Russian Philology, Chair of Russian and Soviet Literature. His third book of poetry called Poems of the Road, Longing, Courage and Struggle was published in Turkey in 1974. With the return of democracy in Turkey he went back to his country and worked as a dramaturge at the Istanbul Municipal Theatre. At the time of the 70's other collections of poems came out: Neither Rain..Nor Poems (1976), During the Siege (1978), The Epic of Moustapha Suphi (1979), Quatrains (1980). Was arrested in March 1982 along with the other executive committee members of the Turkish Peace Association. Was kept under atrocious conditions in Maltepe Military Prison until November 1982, when they have conditionally been released. He was awarded the Lotus Prize by the Afro-Asian Writers Union in 1982. On November 1983, at the session of the Turkish peace Association Trial that he did not attend, he was sentenced to 8 years hard labor followed by 32 months internal exile. He had to leave his country. In 1984 he began in Paris to participate in the work of Sorbonne's National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations, at the Center for Comparative Poetry. Represented Turkey in the International Poetry Festival organized in Rotterdam. He published his collected poems in three volumes (1991-1992), continuously reedited. Be Happy Nazım, a musical on the last period of life of Nazım Hikmet (Translated commented and prepared for the scene by A. Behramoğlu at the base of memories n. Hikmet's widow Vera Tulyakovs and the poems of N. Hikmet) was performed several times in Turkey and abroad. (1992) Lozan, a documentary musical, commenting the historical events in Lozan afterwards the Independence War of Turkey was performed by the Turkish state Theatre in Antalya and in Istanbul (1993). He worked as the president of Turkish Writers Syndicate between 1995- 1999, and still in the literary and political critic at the cadre of daily Cumhuriyet since 1995. His poems are widely translated and published in several foreign languages. In 2003 he was awarded "The Great Prize of Poetry 2003" by Turkish International P.E.N.

2-Amir Or (Israel). Author of 9 volumes of poetry. His latest publications in Hebrew were The Museum of Time (2007) and Heart Beast (2010). His poems have been translated into more than 40 languages and published in anthologies, poetry journals and in 10 books in Europe and the U.S. He has published 6 books in English. His collections have also been published in Polish, Romanian, Arabic and Macedonian. He has translated into Hebrew 8 relevant prose and poetry books.

Or is the 2000th recipient of the Pleiades honor for having made "a significant contribution to modern world poetry". He has won the Bernstein Prize, the Fulbright Award for Writers, the Levi Eshkol Prime Minister's Poetry Prize, and the Oeneumi literary prize of the Tetovo International Poetry Festival (2010). He has also been awarded fellowships of Iowa University, the Centre of Jewish Studies Oxford, the Literarische Colloquium Berlin, the Heinrich Boll Foundation Ireland, and Hawthornden Castle Scotland, among others. For his translations from ancient Greek he was awarded the Culture Minister Prize. He has taught poetry and gave creative writing workshops at Helicon Poetry School as well as in universities in Israel, Japan the U.S. and Europe. He has published numerous essays on poetry, classic studies, and comparative religion. He co-founded Helicon in 1990 and since then initiated and developed its various projects including Helicon's poetry journal and its series of poetry books, the Sha'ar" International Poetry Festival, and the Helicon Poetry School. He has served as Helicon's Chief Editor and Artistic Dirctor, as national editor of Atlas poetry magazine and as national coordinator for the UN sponsored UPC venture "Poets for Peace".

3-Gabriel Rosenstock (Ireland). is the author/translator of over 150 books., mostly in Irish (Gaelic) He taught haiku at the Schule für Dichtung (Poetry Academy) in Vienna. Among his awards is the Tamgha I Kidmat medal for services to literature. He has translated into Irish, among others, Francisco X. Alarcon, Seamus Heaney, Rabindranath Tagore, Gunter Grass, W M Roggeman, Said, Zhang Ye, Michele Ranchetti, Michael Augustin, Peter Huchel, Georg Trakl, Georg Heym, Hansjorg. Schertenleib, Hilde Domin, Johann P. Tammen, Munir Niazi, Ko Un, Gunter Kunert, Iqbal, Michael Kruger, Kristiina Ehin, Nikola Madzirov, Agnar Artuvertin, Walter Helmut Fritz, K. Satchidanandan and Matthias Politycki.

His vast output includes plays, work for TV, novels and short stories, children's literature in prose and verse, including Irish versions of such classics as The Gruffalo. Among the anthologies in which he is represented is Best European Fiction 2012 (Dalkey Archive Press, USA). Two books on haiku as a way of life, Haiku Enlightenment and Haiku, the Gentle Art of Disappearing from Cambridge Scholars Publishing are available from Amazon. Uttering Her Name (Salmon Poetry) is his debut volume of poems in English: "It has a strong feel of some of the great bhakti poetry, like that of Mirabai." 4-Anna Lombardo (Italy). Poet, teacher, translator and editor of the cultural magazine Le Voci della Luna, lives in Venice, where she graduated in English literature. She is currently doing her PhD at the Trinity College in Dublin (Ireland) in Gender Studies. 1-Zingonia Zingone (Italy). Poet, novelist and translator, writes in Spanish and Italian. Brought up between Italy and Costa Rica, graduated in Economics, worked in banking and agriculture in Italy and Central America. Currently lives in Rome.

Poetry editions: Mascara del delirio (Ediciones Perro Azul, 2006; Lietocolle, 2008), Cosmo-agonia (Ediciones Perro Azul, 2007), Tana Katana (Ediciones Perro Azul, 2009). Novel edited in Italian: Il velo (Elephanta Press, 2000). Member of the Editorial Board of Kritya, A Journal of Poetry and advisor of Mediterranea, Intercontinental Festival of Literature and Arts for Latin American poetry. Since 2007 she has participated to numerous International Poetry Festivals in Latin America, Italy and Asia.

2-Maryam Ala Amjadi-Born in 1984 in Tehran (Iran) poet, translator and essayist, has spent the impressionable years of her childhood in India. Author of "ME, I, MYSELF" (poetry collection, 2003) and GYPSY BULLETS (poetry collection, 2010) she has worked as an interpreter at the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA). Ala Amjadi who writes poetry in English was the winner of the Silver Medal in 14th National Persian Literature Olympiad (2001) and was awarded Honorary Fellowship in Creative Writing by the International Writers Program (IWP) at University of Iowa in 2008. Member of the Youth Scholars Club in Tehran, World Poets Society (W.P.S) and a contributing translator to the UniVerse of Poetry forum, she is also the translator of a selection of Raymond Carver's poetry entitled "FEAR OF ARRIVING EARLY" (2009) into Farsi. Ala Amjadi who has graduated in English Literature (MA) from University of Pune is also the winner of the Second Prize (on Gender issues in Translation) in the A.K. Ramanujan National Paper Reading Competition, University of Baroda, India (2009).

3- Annelisa Addolorato Italian writer and hispanist. Grown up between Italy and Spain, both writes in Italian and Spanish. Bilingual poetry books: Mariposas y falenas - Farfalle e falene (Endymion, Madrid 2004) and La palabra ‘lasca’ o la reconstrucción de Pompeya - La parola ‘lasca’ o la ricostruzione di Pompei (Amargord, Madrid 2008). Interested in Videopoetry & MultimediaPoetry.. Poetical projects: Nomadi mondi, included in the poetical community afinidadesafectivas. Poetical readings: Italy, Spain, Israel, Venezuela. You can find her poetical texts in videos, paper’ and web’ antologies (in Italian, Spanish, English, Arabic, German). Monographies: on Octavio Paz (Milán 2001) and Clara Janés (Madrid 2009). She works in the Universities of Milan and Pavia.

International artist/ Film Advisor

1-Odveig Klyve ( Norway) is a Norwegian writer, translator, and film director. She has published eight poetry collections and eight children’s books. Her poetry is translated into several languages.. She has also translated work of the Iranian poet Forugh Farrokhzad, the Palestinian poet Fadwa Tuqan and the English poet. Sarah Maguire. She has written and directed short films presented at international festivals in Europe, USA and India. She now lives in Stavanger at the west coast of Norway.

In case any poet cannot come to kritya festival, the selection team will be slect another poet.

Host director – Vice Chancellor –Vibhuti Narain Rai He joined Indian Police Service in 1975 and was allotted Uttar Pradesh cadre. He served many sensitive districts as Superintendent of Police.He was on deputation to Govt. Of India for ten years from 1992 to 2001. His deputation included posting in anti insurgency operations in Kashmir Valley during 1993-94. Presently he is posted as Additional Director General of Police in Uttar Pradesh. He has been awarded President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Services and Police Medal for Meritorious Services.Apart from being a distinguished police officer Vibhuti Narain Rai is an acclaimed writer of Hindi Literature. He has written five novels – Ghar, Shahar Mein Curfew, Kissa Loktantra, Tabadla and Prem Ki Bhoot Katha and all of them were received warmly by the critics and readers of Hindi. His novel Shahar Mein Curfew was translated in Assamese, Bengali, English, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi and Urdu. Other novels were also translated in many languages. He also writes satires and his collection of satires Ek Chhatra Neta Ka Rojnamcha was widely appreciated.

The novel Tabadla was awarded prestigious Indu Sharma Antarrastriya Katha Samman of London. Another novel Kissa Loktantra was honoured by Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan. Vibhuti Narain Rai is the founder editor of Vartman Sahitya, a leading Hindi Literary Magazine which is being published for last twenty years. He has been writing regular columns in various Hindi Magazines like Vagarth and Anyatha. Vibhuti Narain Rai has been an activist also who has been fighting against the fundamentalist and obscurantist forces of the country. Specially his novel Shahar Mein Curfew invited the wrath of these forced who even demanded ban on it. His book Combating Communal Conflict has been widely quoted by scholars working on communalism. He is invited by National and International bodies working on Communalism on issues related to state response to communal violence. As an activist he has established a library in his native village in a backward area of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. This library Sri Ramanand Saraswati Pustakalaya, Azamgarh was established to promote the culture of book reading and during its existence of 15 years it has become a prestigious cultural centre of the country which has developed a meaningful relationship with institutions like Sahitya Akademi, National Book Trust and National School of Drama.

Festival Director -Rati Saxena - is a poet, Translator, editor and Director poetry festival-kritya. She Is specialized in the study of the Vedas, especially the Atharva Veda, and secured a Ph.D. Degree in Sanskrit from the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. She has published two collections of poetry in English, one in Malayalam (translated), four collections of her own poems in Hindi and a critical work in Hindi on the renowned Malayalam poet Balamani Amma. Her poems have been translated into most of the non-Indian languages also. One of her books has been published in Italian and another in Uzbeck language is under publication. Her work on the Atharvaveda has been published as *The Seeds of the Mind--* a fresh approach to the study of Atharvaveda, under the fellowship of the Indira Gandhi National Center for Arts. She has translated about 12 Malayalam works, both prose and poetry, into Hindi and has participated in several national seminars and published articles in a number of journals. She secured the Kendriya Sahitya Akedemy award for translation for the year 2000. She is Chief Editor of a bilingual web journal for poetry - www.kritya.in - and managing trustee of a literary foundation called Kritya, under which she organized 6 poetry festivals (four international and two national). She has been invited for poetry reading in prestigious poetry festivals "PoesiaPresente" in Monza (Italy), Mediterranea Festival and International House of Stavanger ( Norway) , Struga Poetry Evening , Mecidonia and '3rd hofleiner donauweiten poesiefestival 2010, Vienna and Famous Poetry festival in Medillin, Colombiaand sir hotal turkey etc. She is Founder member and representative from Asia for World Poetry Movement - Medellin.

Towards a Truly Integrated World
Kritya 2013 is devoted to the concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or the visualization of the entire world as a single family. This noble ideal with its latent objective of global peace and friendship is something that is apparently easy to achieve in this era of globalization and yet remains elusive. Poets can be the Messiahs of peace – they have the power of words vested in them. Words that can be constructively employed to foster peace!
