Andriette Stathi and Liana Sakelliou Schulz
Liana Sakelliou Schultz has participated since the very beginning in activities of the Touch Stone group. She joined the trips to Kamilari in Crete 1994 and 1995. She gave also at the Fifth Seminar, Culture action for Europe, held in Athens 1994 one of the major speeches.
Her speech is so outstanding because it dealt for the first time with 'securalization' as being not merely a matter of religion and state, but of state and culture as well. She outlined in that speech what she believes will happen once culture begins to emanicipate itself from the state, namely that the state will then feel terrorised. This is the case if the state feels being robbed of a mask worn to appear 'civilized'. For once that mask is off, it becomes clear that the state is in fact a brutal force even though it appears to be on the civilized side by advocating 'rule of the law'. But as Hegel pointed out, revenge as basic law is not superseded by the modern state; its legal system has merely suspended revenge within the very concept of law. At the same time, the state demands to have the power to impose laws and to make sure its will prevails. In other words, the state may have domesticated merely violence just as farmers have tamed former wild animals to work for them. Yet any sensitive person will realize the inherent violence stems a state ready to unleash forces to prevail and to safeguard its powers. It means not even hesitating to go to war if only to uphold such a monopoly over power i.e. use of violence in the name of a law imposed upon the rest or the others.
She joined as well the 'Myth of the City' conference in 1995 and was happy to be with the other poets, including Brendan Kennelly whom she had met already at a translation workshop and whom she cherished ever since.
