The pledge for the Izmir-Chios Mural
A pledge was made in Chios on May 6th to bring about such an actions that a peace mural can be painted jointly by children from Chios, Greece and Izmir, Turkey.
Takuya Kaneda on behalf of Kids Guernica International donated a canvas for this purpose.
Thomas Economacos with children gathered in Chios started the make drawings on the canvas which was then to be taken to Izmir at a suitable date.
In response a commitment to facilitate such an action in Izmir 27 – 29. September 2007, in order to complete this peace mural, was made by Deniz Hasirci and Gulistan Banu Cel:

Dear Hatto,
How about if we talk about the end of September for the workshop in Izmir, perhaps, 27-28-29
September? It would be more difficult but not impossible to gather the students during the
weekend, and also taking both schools' schedules into consideration, these days seemed appropriate. Of course, we can talk and arrange other days if these do not suit you. How many days did you have in mind? And how many people? Also, would you be able to finance your travel? We can provide accommodation at the university dormitory, I'm guessing. I have talked to the university but I have to write a formal letter once we specify the dates.
By the way, you can check out the university site from http://www.ieu.edu.tr, and the other school's site at http://www.takevilkogretim.k12.tr/#.
Regarding the formal letters of invitation, we only need a letter that briefly explains the project,
symposium and schedule. It would be nice to add that we would be joining with the Buddy
joint program between Izmir University of Economics and TAKEV Private Elementary School.
I thought you could put both addresses on the letter. We could then duplicate and use them.
Thank you so much.

This letter was followed up by one addressing the Prefecture of Chios:
Izmir University of Economics
22 September, 2007
To the Prefecture of Chios,
As an interior architect and academician at the Izmir University of Economics (IUE), my work involves conducting participatory workshops to design spaces for children with children themselves. I have taken part in several projects as such, designing learning environments, attraction centers, museums, and play spaces for children. This led myself and Gulistan Banu Cel Sevgi who also teaches port-time at the Izmir University of Economics as well as TAKEV Middle School, to start a Buddy Program in the 2006-2007 academic year.
We completed our first year bringing together older and younger students from IUE and TAKEV. Our aim is for students to jointly work on projects, gain responsibility, find out about various professions, and learn about what the other thinks and does. I was informed about Kids’ Guernica by quite by coincidence, however, I am very happy to be coming together with them to realize our first event. We will bring the students from the Buddy program with children from Chios, to paint a peace mural of size 7,8 x 3,5 m, here in Izmir between Setember 26 and 29, 2007. The canvas was donated by Takuya Kaneda, international coordinator of Kids’ Guernica.
Our aim was to keep the activity small at first, but that changed along the way as we saw the possibilities of what else could take place in the future. Therefore, we received the note of encouragement from the Mayor of the Greater Municipality of Izmir, and would like to invite the official delegation of Chios for this event.
We would like to invite, NYCHTAS NIKOS(DEPUTY PREFECT OF CHIOS), LIPARI EFTICHIA (HEAD OFFICER DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM), and GEORGIAKODI MARIA (OFFICER).
The university will be covering the accomodation expenses for Hatto Fischer, Thomas Economacos, the art teacher, and the 8 children, and TAKEV will cover for the travel expenses within Izmir and most food requirements for the whole group including the official delegation. We have reserved a nice hotel with reasonable prices for the whole group to stay. This is the hotel/ guesthouse of another university in Izmir. The prices of rooms vary, however, they are around 160 YTL. (approx. 95 Euro) for single, and 230 YTL. (approx. 135 Euro) for double rooms. According to the delegations’ further requests, rooms may be changed, and this may be reflected on the price.
We would be very happy if the delegation could join us and take part in this wonderful event which we hope will be the start of a productive relationship between Turkey and Greece.
Your sincerely,
Assist. Prof. Dr. Deniz HASIRCI
The pledge includes the commitment that the painting shall be shown at the Kids' Guernica exhibition linked to the Symposium "Productivity of Culture" organised by the Network of European Cultural Capital Cities at the Megaron - Zappeion, Athens, Oct. 18 - 19, 2007.
