A crucial question and a marked point of difference

When discussing with Marianne Wagner, director of the 'Freies Museum' all these changes happening in the art scene of Berlin, she poses rightly so the crucial question: „how will all of this affect both the artistic and the cultural development not only within Berlin, but also within the art world around the globe?“

The importance of that question relates to what the Freies Museum in Berlin conceives to be. It aims not to let the artist disappear behind gallerists and curators, but wishes to ensure that they have a place in the organizational process of making an exhibition happen in the available spaces.

Surface matters - Exhibition in the Project space in November 2011

When walking into the court yard, there can be found to the left the project room. It can be rented at 1500 Euros for one month. When visiting there was a special exhibition curated by Dr. Sabine Ziegenrücker.

The exhibition had the title:

surface matters: Wolfgang Schlegel / Heidi Sill

The exhibition is the result of the Gantenbrink Collection wishing to show artistic positions and artists which are not establishes so well as of yet. That could be attested by the fact that Wolfgang Schlegel could be seen distributing leaflets to his own exhibition outside on Potsdamerstreet while Sabine Ziegenrücker explained in the exhibition space the concept behind the exhibition.

Wolfgang Schlegel's broken window pane can be seen on following website: http://www.wolfgangschlegel.eu/
There is a peculiar German term for this: 'ein fest gefügtes Ganzes' – something compressed together to form a tight whole. Even if the window pane is broken, that negative and positive space makes it an interesting interaction with light and thus tightens the entire composition. What could be the direction of this if not an overshooting star the earth. The inclination is to go upward, but the darker colours remind of the gravity of the earth.
There can be associated as well another kind of attraction force implying not so much gravity, but balance. It is the association with a spider web both inside and outside the web itself. The different breakages in the glass can be perceived as if windows in that spider web. That image reminds of Arthur Koestler's reference to the spider web that no matter the number of attachments, it has always balance i.e. suspension in thin air whether now there are only three or ten points of attachments.

Heidi Sill has on the other hand a different approach as to when surface matters. It can mean burned skin!
Her works like 'networks' can be seen on the website of http://www.sammlung-gantenbrink.de/home.html
