Creativity in Motion
Narrative by Savina Tarsitano about an action she undertook in Southern Italy.
In 2005 I developed in Soveria Mannelli, a small village in the Southern Italy, an artistic project entitled “Creativity in Motion” to promote social integration through art.
The project aimed to strengthen art in local community education curricula and to restore a relationships with inhabitants and their own community through an action painting.
The project underlined the necessity to help people to express their ideas and imagination without fears. They can do that best through their creativity. All inhabitants of different ages, born in Soveria Mannelli or living in the area, were asked to work together in painting a public wall (40mx9m) as a symbol of their cooperation and creativity.
Art is a strong tool and helps us to analyze how children use the imagination for exploring and communicating their experiences and identities. In doing this, they create a sense of belonging. That is important as they live at the margins of the wider community.
I want to emphasize the creative potential children have to express their worlds to a broader community through art collaborations and the importance of their concerted efforts to build relationships with the wider community. Art can promote social justice and foster democracy and participatory values, as the core of a revolutionary strategy, and as a source of memory and identity. The role played by art and artists should be not only to document social change, but to inform, create awareness, denounce injustices and promote change. Therefore, I decided to research on the potential relation between Corporate Responsibility and art.
Note:
This action by Savina Tarsitano had a follow-up in Martinique where she did a peace mural with children and there reflected further upon the role of the artist in today's communities. See
