Coming home in Europe

Coming home in Europe: a Europe for all people
3.11.2011

While it is understandable that patience with the Greeks has grown thin, so to speak, Sarkozy and Merkel are in no position to pose ultimatums in the name of Europe. They are nationally elected politicians and have an important role to play in the European decision making process, but the fault line is precisely in this re-nationalization of European politics.
Before any discussion takes place about ousting or not Greece from Europe, the democratic deficit of Europe itself has to be encountered by going further than previously in what is afterall the three folded crisis of Europe: a failure to adapt to a changing reality, a lack of learning from past mistakes and no vision to anticipate the future by making decisions before it is too late. The financial abuse is not new. The EU has to stop being just a clever way of redistributing resources behind the backs of common people. Transparency in the EU budget is needed ever more so. I do hope that we can strengthen the European debate and take a cue from Simon Mundy's book 'coming home' by extending it to 'coming home in Europe'. Together with some former LSE students we are initiating a campaign to make Europe stronger as of Feb. 1st 2012. I hope you join the debate on following blog: http://blog.strongereurope.com/
And by the way, there is this noteworthy discussion paper by Bart Verschaffel that Europe is afterall still a fiction, but a necessary one.
