Penelope Dountoulaki
ΠΗΝΕΛΟΠΗ ΝΤΟΥΝΤΟΥΛΑΚΗ
Coming from a great family involved in the history of Crete and Greece, she is trying to restore currently a small part of a ruined house in the village of my great grandfather, who had fought in all revolutions against the Turkish slavery. The house had been burned thrice. My great grandfather restored it as he could, building on the burned stones. Now almost nothing has been left, but I decided to do a few things there in memory of him. who was also considered to be very intelligent and wise [despite the fact that in those years Greek education had been prohibited he had learned to read and write and he was able to advise anyone seeking his help]. He was among the few who first signed the Declaration of the Great Revolution in 1866.
She has written seven books with the title 'Memory of the ashes' to document traces of Second World War from the Battle of Crete to the concentration camps in Austria, Germany and Poland. Some of her writings have contributed to the ongoing research and publications of the Holocaust Museum in Washington. Her poem 'Specks of Ashes' reveals what sensitivity she has developed for this subject. It goes beyond being merely a doctor trained at the University of Newcastle upon the Tyne. She has also been vice mayor in charge of culture for the city of Chania.
