Athens 26.8.2015

For the Olympic Games Athens 2004, Poiein kai Prattein published ten poetry books under the general theme „Poetry Connection: Poets and the Olympic Truce“. (1) The war in Iraq dominated at that time. It left the Youth completely disappointed for they saw a failure to uphold the Olympic Truce. Consequently Poiein kai Prattein organized ogether with PEACE WAVES a youth festival in Torino to draft a new Olympic Truce which was given to the Italian Parliament, and from there passed on to the United Nations. The aim was to ensure the Olympic Truce would be kept at the Winter Olympic Games in 2006. It was at this festival that Poiein kai Prattein came across the Kids' Guernica action: youth from different countries, including Afghanistan, Israel, Palestine, etc. painting a peace mural on a canvas which has the same size as Picasso's Guernica, namely 7,8 x 3,5. The idea had originated in Japan in 1995 in memory of not only Guernica 1937, but also of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For these attacks from the air mean the same: the killing of innocent civilians, among them children and youth, and as Picasso expressed it a human cry too often drowned in silence. Since then, Kids' Guernica – Guernica Youth has done many actions all over the world. Among them are two examples: one in Tripoli, Lebanon, done immediately after the war in 2006 with the significant title: „Enough! We want to live“ (2); the other brought youth from Chios together with pupils and students in Izmir, Turkey to foster an intercultural dialogue (3). Both these murals were shown at the ECCM Symposium „Productivity of Culture“ held in Athens June 2007. (4), and shall be shown again in Olympia in conjunction with the symposium „A need for a constructive dialogue“. These peace murals stand for a special dialogue since they use the imagination to foster empathy for the other. Jad Salman, artist from Palestine, would say children and youth express themselves in such simple terms joy, so that adults need to overcome the risk to overlook and therefore not to understand the depth of their longing for peace. Especially in a digital age, when other images dominate and literacy often lost, this understanding of peace requiring empathy for the other is needed more than ever. (5)
