Donation of Canvas in Gent 2011

                  Adam Chmielewski and Takuya Kaneda,

Takuya Kaneda, coordinator of Kids' Guernica in Japan, donated one canvas to Adam Chmielewski, who was preparing at that time the bid for Candidate City Wroclaw 2016.

When first contact was made with Adam Chmielewski, philosopher and director of Wroclaw 2016, he had already the idea to do something in conjunction with Spain due to select like Poland one city to become European Capital of Culture in 2016. He wants to convert one public space in Wroclaw by renaming it 'Spanish Square', and before having heard about Kids' Guernica, he wanted to do something like a hommage to Picasso and Guernica. This he wanted to do for two reasons. For one, the person responsible for conceiving the bombardment of Guernica in 1937 was a man called von Richthoven and who resided in the then Breslau, now Wroclaw. Then, in 1947, Picasso attended the first Peace Conference held in Wroclaw. During his visit he drew the now famous pigeon, a symbol of peace, on a napkin while sitting in the foyer of a hotel.

Once Hatto Fischer had introduced to Adam Chmielewski the idea of Kids' Guernica and saw that this project had matured already much farther, he took up this idea and came to the conference held on Feb. 18th in Gent. The topic of the conference was 'Kids' Guernica and European Capitals of Culture: the Cultural Dimension of Peace'. At the reception offered to participants by the Vice Mayor of Gent at City Hall, Takuya Kaneda who had come extra from Japan, handed to Adam Chmielewski as a donation a new canvas to support the Kids' Guernica action in Wroclaw.

Letter from Adam Chmielewski end of May 2011:

"This is to inform you that kids of Wroclaw are in the process of painting the Kids' Guernica. The link below sends you to some photos taken from the process. This process is taking place for two weeks now; two professional painters, who have an extensive experience in the work with kids, also those handicapped, are working with them. One day a bunch of kids wioth the Down syndrome joined the core group of kids. It is all documented by photographers and a camera.
No politicians are involved in this. Following the injunctions of Hatto, even I did not interfere. We expect to present the final work in the middle of June in the Wroclaw's Market Square."
Yours,
Adam Chmielewski
