Rescue of House in Exarchia

ΠΑΡΑΔΟΣΗ, ΠΡΑΣΙΝΟ ΚΑΙ ΠΟΙΟΤΗΤΑ ΖΩΗΣ :

ΟΧΙ ΣΤΗΝ ΚΑΤΕΔΑΦΙΣΗ

ΜΙΑ ΠΡΟΤΑΣΗ ΓΙΑ ΤΟ ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΤΗΣ ΑΘΗΝΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΑ ΕΞΑΡΧΕΙΑ

Στα Εξάρχεια, μια από τις πιο παλιές και ζωντανές γειτονιές του κέντρου της πρωτεύουσας, οι κάτοικοι αγωνίζονται να διασώσουν ένα από τα πιο παλιά αθηναϊκά σπίτια καθώς και το δέντρο που ριζώνει στην αυλή του και χαρίζει σκιά στον περαστικό για περισσότερο από ένα αιώνα.

Το συγκρότημα στη συμβολή των οδών Θεμιστοκλέους 62 και Τζαβέλα 30 αναπτύσσεται σε σχήμα Π γύρω από μια αυλή και είναι χαρακτηριστικό δείγμα της αθηναϊκής λαϊκής αρχιτεκτονικής του τέλους του 19^ου αιώνα (ένα από τα ελάχιστα δείγματα που απομένουν). Τα μορφολογικά στοιχεία των κτισμάτων είναι λιτά, νεοκλασικά με πολύ ενδιαφέρουσες λεπτομέρειες, ενδεικτικές της εποχής. Το συγκρότημα συμπληρώνει την εικόνα του περιβάλλοντος χώρου όπου σώζονται αρκετά νεοκλασικά, εκλεκτικιστικά και μεσοπολεμικά κτήρια.

Σήμερα, τα κτίσματα, που αποτελούν το ιστορικό αυτό συγκρότημα αλλά και το δέντρο στην αυλή του, κινδυνεύουν με εξαφάνιση μια που ο ιδιοκτήτης, το Γενικό Επιτελείο Ναυτικού/Ταμείο Εθνικού Στόλου προγραμματίζει άμεση κατεδάφιση με απώτερο σκοπό την ανέγερση πενταόροφης πολυκατοικίας για εμπορική εκμετάλλευση.

Οι κάτοικοι της περιοχής προτείνουν:

• Καθαρισμό του συγκροτήματος για την εξασφάλιση της δημόσιας υγείας.

• Προστασία του αιωνόβιου δέντρου στο διηνεκές.

• Διάσωση και αποκατάσταση των κτηρίων που αποτελούν το συγκρότημα.

• Διατήρηση του εσωτερικού αίθριου ως χώρου πρασίνου και αναψυχής.

• Εκπόνηση σοβαρής αρχιτεκτονικής μελέτης που θα συνδυάζει την αξιοποίηση της περιουσίας του Ταμείου Εθνικού Στόλου με το καλό της γειτονιάς.

• Συνεργασία με τους ενεργούς κατοίκους της περιοχής Εξαρχείων.

• Συμμόρφωση με την απόφαση της 1^ης Δημοτικής Κοινότητας του Δήμου Αθηναίων η οποία ζητά την άμεση αναστολή της έκδοσης οικοδομικής άδειας ενώ προτρέπει το Δήμο και το ΥΠ.ΠΟ σε άμεσες ενέργειες για την κήρυξη του κτηρίου ως διατηρητέου.

RESCUE OF AN OLD HOUSE OF ATHENS INCLUDING A BLOSSOMING TREE. EXARHEIA CALL FOR CULTURE, MEMORY AND MORE GREEN IN THE CITY CENTRE.

In the neighborhood Exarheia, among the oldest and most lively areas of the Greek metropolis, the citizens are striving to save one of its oldest houses where a blooming tree is giving its shade to the passer-by for more than a century.

The cluster of buildings at the crossroad of Themistokleous 62 and Tzavela 30 streets has a ground plan forming the capital Greek letter Π. These buildings comprising as well an internal patio, are officially considered as typical examples of the popular Athenian architecture dated in the late 19^th century (among the last remaining in the city). Their morphological features are plain neoclassical with very interesting details, typical of the period. The house of reference is intrinsically connected with the surrounding architecture, namely with the other neoclassical, eclectic and inter-war buildings of Themistokleous street.

This cluster of buildings and the tree inside the patio are now in danger, since the heir-at-law, the General Navy Staff/State Revenue Office of the Navy, has decided to take it down. The purpose of the enterprise is to replace it with a 5 storey building in order to meet urgent financial aims.

The neighborhood wishes to suggest alternative proposals such as:

-Keeping the whole block clean for health reasons.
-Taking measures for the survival of the tree.
-Rescue and restoration of the buildings which form the old cluster.
-Preservation of the patio in order to serve as a ‘’green spot’’ and a space for recreation.
-Preparation of an equally viable and sober plan that will serve the needs of the legal owner (the State Revenue Office of the Navy) as well as the neighborhood’s well being.
-Collaboration with the citizens of Exarheia.
-Compliance with the decision of the 1^st Municipal Community of the City of Athens which calls for the suspension of any building permission as well as for further actions to be taken by both the Municipality and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism aiming at the declaration of the house as a scheduled and preservable building.
